After my arrival on Monday night, the night of the fires and lootings, I began to see deeper into the problems of Baltimore. Rather than making images of destruction, I stopped thinking about shooting for the press and began telling the story of Baltimore based on my own encounters and understanding. I found a story about fearlessness, determination, and hope. I saw a community committed to salvaging and reinvigorating its sense of purpose and solidarity. I photographed barbeques where rival gangs, like the Bloods and Crips, came together to work for peace. I witnessed a community on a day when it shared utter enjoyment and fulfillment because its fight for Freddie Gray paid off and the police officers involved in his death faced charges of homicide. For once, everyone was wondering--was the world starting to pay attention? The City of Baltimore is still listed in critical condition and now the hard work of rebuilding a city begins.
